Obituary

Franzyshen, Natalee Spiro 72, of Barhamsville, VA, died on November 6, 2021 from ALS (formerly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). This disease stole many things and abilities from her, but it never took her fighting spirit or her desire to be in control. Natalee was born May 21, 1949 in San Francisco, CA to Norman and Emma Lee Spiro. She was the oldest of three sisters. While in high school her father's work took her to Virginia. The move brought her many lasting friendships as well as the opportunity to meet her future husband (Henry) a marriage of forty-nine years that would last till her death. After graduation from Mary Washington College in 1971, Natalee had a varied career path that included teacher, social worker, banker, and accountant. She retired from the FBI in 2008, having served as a financial analyst and financial manager. While Natalee was raised in the Jewish faith, she eventually converted to Catholicism via the RCIA program. She expanded her RCIA commitment to include helping to administer and lead lessons in the program and became a lector and Eucharistic Minister at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond. After her move to Barhamsville in 2013 Natalee served as lector and taught first and second grade Sunday School at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in West Point. Natalee was also a caregiver to many friends and family. Natalee's hobbies included reading, computer technology, sewing (including her wedding and bridesmaid dresses) and of course cooking and feeding a crowd. Unfortunately, her disease took two of favorite things (eating and talking). Natalee was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Henry and two sisters Loralee Lenz (Larry) and Cindi Smith (Jeff), Henry's brothers Frank (Jean) and Ronald and sister-in-law Pattsy (Jim). She also leaves a beloved dog, Loki. While Henry and Natalee never had children they were blessed with many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews and include Steve (Cheryl), Christina (Dan), Stephen, Adam, Andrew (Beth), Seth, Roger, Heather (Ryan), Oli, Hunter, Thomas, Carly (Larry), Tyler, Celia (BJ), Alexi, Scarlett, Nichole (Mason), Cole, Henry Mac, Laura (Derek), Asher, Addison, JR, Travis (Shannon), Romona, Lindi, April, and Silas. She is also survived by many cousins on both sides of her family as well as her best friends Fran, Kent, Annalee, Hannelore, Edgar, Nick, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Vickie, Virginia and many more, too numerous to mention. A special thank you to her caregivers, Vanessa and Safi, and her cousin Dorothy. Natalee's family will receive friends from 4 to 6pm on Sunday, November 14 at Bliley's Central Location, 3801 Augusta Avenue. A Christian Wake Service will follow at 6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 15, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, West Point, VA. Burial will be private at St. John Kanti Cemetery, Barhamsville, VA. Memorial donations may be directed to the Gleason Foundation, the ALS Association, the Alzheimer's Association, or New Kent Animal Rescue.
